Look a the source on page 74 called "The Anti's Creed" and the source on page 75 by the Australian Labor party. Explain in a few lines the message each of these pieces of propaganda. Explain how they are trying to convince people to follow their ideas about conscription.
Read about Archbishop Mannix on pages 75 and 76 and explain, firstly, what was his message about conscription and secondly, why do you think he was so against conscription?

- Do some research and try to find the most interesting trench warfare story that you can from the web. You might want to include in your search some topics like rats, lice, trench foot, survival stories, etc. In your notes, create a link to the story.
- What does the term stalemate mean in chess and how does it apply to trench warfare?
- Why was defence much easier than attack?

- Billy Hughes needed to change the constitution to bring in conscription. To do so you must have a referendum. What was the outcome of the two referendums on conscription?
